Kula
Watching the sun rise above the clouds at 10,023 feet is transcendent — you are literally above most of Maui's clouds. Temperature is 30–40°F at summit; bring layers, gloves, and blankets. Allow 1.5 hours driving from Kihei at 3am. Schedule this early in the trip while the group is still on mainland time and naturally waking at 4–5am — it is far easier than on day 8. If sunrise permits are unavailable, the sunset visit (no reservation required) delivers nearly the same experience with none of the hardship; many visitors actually prefer it.
Hāna
You cannot do everything in one day — you will need to choose. Non-negotiable stops: Ke'anae Peninsula (about halfway, lava church + taro fields + Aunty Sandy's banana bread — order extra, it sells out), Waianapanapa Black Sand Beach (reserve separately $25/person), Hamoa Beach after Hana village, and Pipiwai Trail at Kipahulu for the bamboo forest and Waimoku Falls. Skip the Hana Lava Tube if time is short. Fill gas in Paia before departure — the only station in Hana can be closed. The back road from Kipahulu back to Kihei (~30 min of unpaved road past the Pools of 'Ohe'o) is prohibited under most rental car contracts and not insured; double back the same way.
Waimea
The "Grand Canyon of the Pacific" — 14 miles long, 1 mile wide, 3,600 feet deep. Deep red volcanic soil against tropical green and cloud wisps is genuinely awe-inspiring. Kalalau Valley Lookout at the end of the road is the only view into the roadless Na Pali interior. For a hike: from Pu'u Hinahina Lookout, take the Waimea Canyon Trail (also called "New Spur Trail" on Google Maps) to Waipo'o Falls (~5km round trip, 2–2h30) — completely uncrowded, spectacular canyon views throughout, and a beautiful falls at the end. Visit before 11am for the clearest lookout visibility; valley clouds build by midday most days.
Haʻena
The end of the road on Kauai's north shore — the most coveted permit on the island. Ke'e Beach is sheltered in summer for superb snorkeling in calm, clear water with sea turtles. The Kalalau Trail begins here: the first 2 miles to Hanakapiʻai Beach (1–2 hours each way) is one of the finest short day hikes in Hawaii — clifftop ocean views, valleys inaccessible any other way, and a remote black sand beach at the end (swimming prohibited). Add the 3.5km spur to Hanakapiʻai Falls for a full 5–6 hour day. The trail can be very muddy after rain; add significant time and wear proper shoes.
Volcano
The only place in the world to witness an active shield volcano in real time. Kilauea has erupted continuously in various forms since 1983. Drive Crater Rim Drive, walk Thurston Lava Tube (free, 10 min loop), and drive all 19 miles of Chain of Craters Road to where lava met the ocean — the road simply ends in a lava field. Kilauea Iki Trail (6km crater floor hike) is the best single activity in the park. Check current eruption status at nps.gov/havo before going. Always check the vog index (vog.higp.hawaii.edu) before the day — sulfur dioxide from the caldera can cause serious respiratory distress for anyone with asthma or heart conditions.
Mauna Kea
At 13,796 feet, Mauna Kea is one of the world's premier astronomical sites — the Milky Way looks painted on. Two very different experiences: (1) The Visitor Information Station (VIS) at 9,200ft — free, no 4WD required, open nightly 6–10pm, telescopes available. VIS staff run a free public stargazing evening with larger telescopes once a month (reservation required; check ifa.hawaii.edu/vis). This is excellent for anyone without a 4WD vehicle. (2) Summit at 13,796ft — requires a 4WD vehicle above the VIS; rental cars are neither permitted nor insured on the unpaved summit road. Mandatory: acclimatize 30+ minutes at the VIS before going higher. No children under 13 above 13,000ft recommended. Temperature at summit: 30–45°F with extreme wind chill regardless of the coast forecast.
Kailua-Kona
Easy, flat, walkable strip along Kailua Bay past Mokuaikaua Church and Huliheʻe Palace, ending at oceanfront restaurants for sunset dinner; good low-key evening for travelers already based in Kona town.
Pāʻia
A shallow, reef-protected lagoon on Maui's north shore next to Baldwin Beach, the calmest swimming spot in the Paia area and a good pick for families with small children; there is no shade, so bring an umbrella or tent.

West Maui
Drive it clockwise, Kapalua towards Wailuku, so you stay on the mountain side rather than the cliff edge. Past Nakalele the road narrows to one lane with blind bends, no guardrails and steep drops: give way to local drivers, be ready to reverse to a pull-out, and skip it if the traveller is a nervous driver, in heavy rain or in a large vehicle. At Nakalele stay well back — rogue waves over the lava shelf have swept people in and killed several. Kahakuloa is a residential village; stop at the roadside banana-bread stands (cash only) but drive slowly.
Haʻena
The National Tropical Botanical Garden's original garden: a working ahupuaʻa of native and Polynesian-introduced plants and taro terraces below Makana peak — the north shore's standout stop for garden-minded clients.
Mauna Kea
Free sunset viewing and naked-eye stargazing with staff-led sky talks at 9,200 ft; there have been no public telescopes since 2019 (safety/overcrowding), so this is not a telescope-viewing stop.

A compact, well-maintained zoo in the heart of Waikiki — manageable for families with young children in 2 hours. Good collection of Hawaiian native birds and animals alongside African savanna and Southeast Asian exhibits. Go at opening before the day heats up. Combine with a morning at Waikiki Beach 10 minutes away.
Waikīkī
Waikiki has the mildest, most forgiving surf conditions in Hawaii — the original home of surfing, where Duke Kahanamoku taught the world. Long, slow-rolling waves on a sandy bottom. The standing-up success rate for first-timers is extremely high. Even non-athletes will be standing by the end. The most quintessentially Hawaiian experience available in Waikiki.

Consistently ranked among the top 10 beaches in the United States — 2 miles of powdery white sand with impossibly clear turquoise water and no hotel towers on the beach. The contrast with Waikiki is total: quiet, local, uncommercialized. The twin Mokulua islets offshore make a superb kayak destination (45 min paddling each way from the beach). Ideal sequence: Lanikai Pillbox hike at sunrise, drop down to Kailua Beach for the morning, Kailua town for lunch at Nalu Health Bar or Buzz's.

A permanent resident Cirque du Soleil show created specifically for Hawaii and inspired by Hawaiian mythology, the ocean, and the Aloha Spirit. Opened December 2024 — the first permanent Cirque show in Hawaii. Intimate 800-seat theater. Stunning acrobatics woven through authentic hula, Polynesian chant, and contemporary Hawaiian music. An excellent dinner-show evening without leaving Waikiki.
Lāhainā
The historic whaling capital of the Pacific and the largest banyan tree in the USA (planted 1873, covers 1.94 acres). The 2023 fire killed 102 residents and permanently changed this town. Visit respectfully and spend money at surviving local businesses.
Kula
The underrated alternative to sunrise — warmer temperatures, the drive up in daylight, and the same extraordinary sky show above the clouds, without the 3am alarm. Do a 20–30 minute walk down the Sliding Sands Trail into the crater before sunset to experience the scale of the caldera from inside. After the sun sets, stay 20 more minutes for the cloud color show below the rim. If sunrise permits are sold out (which happens constantly), recommend sunset without hesitation — many visitors actually prefer it for comfort and for having energy to appreciate what they are seeing.
Kula
The most beautiful farm on Maui — 55+ varieties of lavender on the slopes of Haleakala with sweeping ocean views. The terrace tea service is a lovely slow morning. Combine with an Upcountry Maui drive.
Pāʻia
The world capital of windsurfing and kitesurfing — on a strong trade wind afternoon, 30–50 world-class riders transform the bay into an open-air performance that no arena seat can replicate. Watch from the upper lookout before descending. The beach itself is not for swimming (powerful shore break and rip current), but May through September the right side of the bay calms enough for snorkeling, and Hawaiian green sea turtles regularly haul out on the sand to bask. A 45-minute stop with a very high payoff-to-effort ratio.
Lāhainā
Maui waters are legendary for blue marlin, mahi-mahi, yellowfin tuna, and wahoo. The 100-fathom drop-off is 1.5 miles offshore. Most restaurants offer "catch and cook" service to prepare your catch that evening.
Kahului
The only way to truly see Haleakala's massive crater from above, fly the Road to Hana without driving it, and see the interior waterfalls that have no land access. The West Maui Mountains — also only accessible by air — are as dramatic as Kauai's Na Pali Coast and almost no one has seen them. Blue Hawaiian has the best safety record and narration; Air Maui offers doors-off tours for photographers. The Na Moku 45-minute route covers the most essential sights; the Circle Island route adds the Kaupo Gap and Hana coast and is worth the extra cost.
Poʻipū
The sunniest beach on Kauai (south shore reliably escapes north shore rains). Two distinct draws: Hawaiian monk seals — one of the world's most endangered marine mammals, with only ~1,400 remaining — regularly haul out here to rest; maintain a legally required 50-foot distance. Hawaiian green sea turtles are common in the water year-round. The beach itself is excellent for swimming and snorkeling on the reef side. In winter, whales are sometimes visible offshore. The combination of reliable sun, wildlife, and swimmable conditions makes Poipu the most consistently satisfying beach on the island.
Haʻena
The most dramatic coastal trail in the United States — 11 miles of Na Pali cliffs with no road access and no way out except back the way you came. Two day-hike options: (1) First 2 miles to Hanakapiʻai Beach (1–2 hours each way) — this alone delivers clifftop views that rival anything in Hawaii; the beach at the end is a remote black sand cove, swimming prohibited due to shore break. (2) Continue 3.5km inland from the beach to Hanakapiʻai Falls (add 3 hours round trip) — a 91m waterfall in a jungle amphitheater. Plan 5–6 hours total for beach + falls. Trail is extremely muddy after rain; add 30–60% to time estimates and wear closed-toe shoes with grip.
Kapaʻa
The best accessible ridge hike on the east side of Kauai — a 4km round trip trail to the ridge of the mountain profile that, from the coast, resembles a giant sleeping on his back. The summit viewpoint delivers 360° panoramas: Wailua River and coast below, Ha'upu Ridge behind, and Hanalei Bay direction in the distance on a clear day. A steady climb rather than strenuous; well-maintained and well-shaded. An excellent morning activity from a Kapaa base before heading north or south.
Poʻipū
A marine geyser where ocean swells force water through a lava tube and shoot it 3–9 meters into the air, accompanied by a deep hissing roar. The height and frequency depend on swell size — bigger surf equals a more dramatic show. A second smaller hole alongside produces an eerie moaning sound; local legend holds it is the cry of a giant lizard trapped inside the lava centuries ago. A quick 30-minute stop that punches well above its time investment — it tends to surprise visitors who expected something minor.
Poʻipū
Two of the finest botanical gardens in the United States, side by side in a sheltered coastal valley. McBryde is the larger research garden — 5,000+ plant species arranged across 252 acres of valley floor, self-guided with an audio wand. Allerton is the historic private estate turned garden, with monumental outdoor sculptures, reflecting pools, and the famous Moreton Bay fig trees used in Jurassic Park (the root system where the raptor eggs were found). The guided Allerton tour (2.5 hours) is one of the most memorable experiences on Kauai — worth the price difference over McBryde.
Poʻipū
A 4km coastal cliff walk from Shipwreck Beach past ancient sand dunes, sea caves, and a limestone sinkhole to the remote Mahaulepu Beach — one of the least-visited beautiful beaches on the south shore. The trail passes Makauwahi Cave, Hawaii's largest limestone cave, which opens to visitors only on set days — check before planning to go inside. Sea turtles are commonly spotted on the rocky headlands; Hawaiian monk seals rest here occasionally; and in winter humpback whales are visible offshore. Far more interesting than sitting on Poipu Beach and almost no one does it.
Haʻena
The best snorkeling beach on Kauai's north shore — a broad sandy bay with a fringing reef system that creates the "tunnels" of the name: coral archways, swim-throughs, and lava formations with exceptional fish diversity. Water clarity is outstanding when the sea is calm. The backdrop of fluted Na Pali ridges directly behind the beach makes this one of the most visually dramatic settings for a beach day in Hawaii. The Ha'ena permit system means the beach is never overcrowded. Combine with the Limahuli Garden (10 min further) or as the beach portion of a Na Pali hike day.
Kapaʻa
The most enjoyable cycling on Kauai — a flat, paved coastal path with beautiful white sand beaches on one side and tropical vegetation on the other, virtually no cars. Unlike most of Kauai which requires a vehicle, this can be done entirely without one. The path passes multiple beaches ideal for a spontaneous swim, and the ocean views are unobstructed throughout. A 90-minute easy ride; strong cyclists can extend it significantly. One of the best-value activities on the island.
Honokaʻa
The most sacred valley in Hawaii — the "Valley of the Kings" where ancient Hawaiian royalty rested. 1,800-foot walls of fluted green cliffs enclose taro fields, wild horses, and a black sand beach. The hiking trail from the lookout down to the valley floor is currently closed (check current status before visiting). Guided mule wagon tours remain available and provide the cultural context the lookout alone cannot: the valley's role in Hawaiian history, the working taro paddies, and the black sand beach at the end are extraordinary. Do NOT drive your rental car down the road — it is prohibited in virtually all rental agreements and the 25% grade with blind corners has caused fatal accidents.
Kohala Coast
The most consistently swimmable beach on the Big Island — a half-mile crescent of white sand with warm, clear water and reliable surf conditions for bodyboarding. Consistently voted Hawaii's #1 beach for swimming. Almost no shade on the beach itself; the Hapuna Beach Resort above rents umbrellas. In winter (November–February) north swells build and the beach becomes excellent for bodyboarding, though non-swimmers should check conditions. A restorative contrast after days of lava and volcanoes.
Kailua-Kona
The nocturnal manta experience from below the surface is even more extraordinary than snorkeling — mantas circle in feeding spirals within arm's reach at 20–30 foot depth. Multiple mantas typically present; the record in a single evening is 78. The best night dive in the Pacific.
Kailua-Kona
A national historical park 10 minutes from Kona that almost no tourists visit — ancient Hawaiian fishponds, lava coast, and a sheltered bay where Hawaiian green sea turtles rest on the beach in numbers that rival Punalu'u. The ʻAiʻōpio Fishtrap area is the focal point: a large enclosed lava pool used for ancient aquaculture, now filled with fish and surrounded by turtles on the rocks. Swimming is possible from a small beach in the protected cove. The combination of free entry, no crowds, and genuine wildlife makes this one of the best-kept secrets on the island.
Wailea
The easiest snorkel on the south side: reef right off the sand at the north end, calm most mornings, lifeguard-free but sheltered. Starting point of the Wailea Beach Path.
Keauhou
Pacific manta rays with wingspans up to 18 feet perform feeding rolls through plankton-rich water illuminated by boat lights — and you float on the surface as they rise toward your face. Sighting rate is 90%+. The most magical wildlife encounter in all of Hawaii, full stop.
Wailuku
A stone house built in 1833 at the mouth of ʻĪao Valley, later the Wailuku Female Seminary run by Caroline and Edward Bailey. A museum since 1957: pre-contact Hawaiian artifacts and Edward Bailey's paintings of ʻĪao. Open Tuesday to Friday, 10 AM–2 PM.

Small plantation-era town on Hanalei Bay with taro-field views, galleries and casual lunch options; pairs well as a half-day stop with a Hanalei Bay beach visit.

Kūkaʻemoku, the ʻĪao Needle, is an erosional ridge rising 1,200 ft from the valley floor that looks like a spire seen end-on; it is sacred in Hawaiian tradition.
Makawao
The old paniolo (cowboy) town where Baldwin Ave, Makawao Ave and Olinda Rd meet. The forest reserve above it was proclaimed on 21 April 1908 to protect East Maui's watershed.
Wailuku
The heart of historic Wailuku, Maui's county seat since 1905. The Spanish Mission-style ʻĪao Theater opened on 22 August 1928 as a movie and vaudeville house; it is on the National Register and home to Maui OnStage.
Hanalei
The Nā Ala Hele ridge trail climbs about 1,230 ft in 2.3 miles to Kaukaopua, with the best view there is of Hanalei Valley's taro fields and the bay. Go early before the heat and clouds, and skip it the day after rain: the red dirt turns steep and slippery, and there are landslide-prone cliff edges. Hunting is allowed in the area, so stay on the trail.
Wailea
A paved mile of oceanfront past the resorts between Ulua and Polo Beach — the South Maui postcard. Pedestrian only: park and walk. Humpbacks from the path in winter.
Kāneʻohe
A 1/3-scale replica of the 950-year-old Byodo-In Temple in Uji, Japan, set against the dramatic fluted Ko'olau cliffs. Black swans, koi ponds, and a giant brass bell. One of Oahu's most photogenic and underrated spots.
Downtown Honolulu
The only royal palace in the United States — former residence of the last Hawaiian monarchs, Kings Kalakaua and Queen Liliuokalani. The self-guided audio tour recounts the illegal overthrow of the Hawaiian kingdom in 1893 with striking historical candor. The palace was restored to its 1882 state; the throne room and blue room are extraordinary. An essential 60 minutes for anyone wanting to understand Hawaii's complicated history.
Downtown Honolulu
One of the finest art museums in the Pacific — uncrowded, high-quality, and beautifully laid out around several garden courtyards. The Japanese art collection is exceptional (one of the best in the US outside major mainland cities). European works include Monet, Matisse, Gauguin, Rodin. The permanent Hawaiian art gallery upstairs is thoughtfully curated. The courtyard café is a lovely lunch stop. Allow 2 hours but could easily fill half a day.
Kāneʻohe
A working ukulele workshop making some of the finest Hawaiian ukuleles in the world ($600–$6,000+). The 90-minute guided tour covers the full build process from raw koa wood to finished instrument — the selection of tonewood, the hand-bending, the inlay work. Even non-musicians find it fascinating. One of those genuinely local, non-touristy experiences that makes a trip feel different.
Wailuku
Sacred valley with a striking 1,200-foot green needle (Iao Needle) rising from the valley floor. Site of the 1790 Battle of Kepaniwai. The valley receives 400 inches of rain annually — impossibly lush.
Kīpahulu
The Kipahulu section of Haleakala National Park is completely different from the summit — lush, coastal, and jungle-green. The Pools of 'Ohe'o (Seven Sacred Pools) cascade in tiers to the ocean and are beautiful to photograph; swimming is now prohibited due to bacterial risk. The real experience is the Pipiwai Trail (4km round trip): after 20 minutes through dense rainforest, a section of giant bamboo appears — a cathedral that blocks the sky, with the stalks creaking and resonating in the wind. It is genuinely unlike anything else in Hawaii. The trail ends at 61m Waimoku Falls. This is the best 2 hours at the end of a Road to Hana day and the reason to not turn around at Hana village.
Haʻikū
The traditional first stop on the Road to Hana — a short, easy walk through fruit trees and bamboo to multiple tiered waterfalls with actual swimmable pools (unlike most waterfalls on the Hana route, which prohibit swimming). It is somewhat commercialized — there are smoothie stands — but the falls and pools are genuinely beautiful and refreshing. Keep it to 60–90 minutes or it derails the timing for the rest of the day. Also works as a standalone hike from Paia for anyone who wants a quick nature experience without doing the full Road to Hana.
Makawao
Ride through 700-year-old eucalyptus forests and open paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) pasturelands at 3,500ft elevation. The landscape — cooler, green, and cinematic — is completely different from the coast.
Hanalei
The most photographed beach in Hawaii — a perfect 2-mile crescent of golden sand backed by fluted Na Pali ridgelines, with Hanalei Pier (built 1892, rebuilt 2023) stretching into the bay as the iconic foreground. Calm and swimmable May–September; powerful north swells transform it into a serious surf break October–April. Kayak and paddleboard rental at Kayak Kauai in Hanalei town. Hanalei town itself has the island's most charming main street — surf shops, galleries, and excellent restaurants within walking distance of the beach.
Wailua
Kauai's only navigable river — kayak 2 miles upstream, hike 1.5 miles through dense jungle, arrive at a 120-foot waterfall with a pristine pool. The most accessible backcountry waterfall experience in Hawaii.
Wailua
A spectacular 27m double waterfall on the Wailua River — one of the most photographed waterfalls in Hawaii and famously used in the opening sequence of the old Fantasy Island TV series. The viewpoint parking area is right at the edge: no hike required, total time commitment 20 minutes. The cascade is at its most dramatic after rain when the Wailua River is running high. Combine with a Wailua River kayak day or as a quick stop on the way from Kapaa to the south shore.
Hanapēpē
Kauai's most charming small town — a preserved old plantation-era main street with independent art galleries, local shops, and cafes, reportedly the inspiration for the setting of Disney's Lilo & Stitch. The Hanapepe Swinging Bridge (a pedestrian suspension bridge over the river) is a quick detour. Friday Art Night (every Friday 5–9pm) brings out 20+ gallery owners, live music, and food vendors in a genuinely local, uncommercialized atmosphere — one of the nicest free evenings on the island. Combine with a Waimea Canyon day on the drive back.
Mākena
Snorkelling over lava in a protected reserve at Āhihi Bay — the best fish count on the coast when the sea is calm. Rocky entry: reef shoes, no fins on the rocks. No facilities.
Kauaʻi
The most dramatic 17 miles of coastline in the world — 4,000-foot emerald cliffs plunging directly into the Pacific with no road access. Zodiac inflatables enter sea caves and reach waterfalls that catamarans cannot. The rough water is half the experience.
Līhuʻe
The Na Pali cliffs are only fully accessible by helicopter — Manawaiopuna Falls (the 'Jurassic Park Falls') has no land access whatsoever. Flying low over 4,000-foot sea cliffs is a genuinely life-altering experience. Jack Harter specializes in doors-off tours for photography.
Port Allen
The morning sail is the one that includes snorkelling and meals; the Nā Pali cliffs can otherwise only be seen from the air or on foot. Sea conditions decide the route on the day, and travellers prone to seasickness should take something before boarding.
North Shore
Summer (roughly May–October) is usually flat enough to swim at Waimea Bay; in the winter surf season (November–April, peaking in December) these are big-wave breaks and Ocean Safety tells everyone to stay out of the water. On big days watch from the sand well above the high-water line — sets wash far up the beach — or from the highway pull-out above Waimea Bay. Contests (Pipe Masters, the Eddie) run on holding periods called at short notice and bring heavy traffic on the two-lane road.
Kapalua
Clear-water snorkel beach inside the Honolua-Mokulē'ia Bay Marine Life Conservation District, turtles are common; calm and good for snorkeling in summer, but winter (roughly Nov-Mar) brings dangerous surf and rip currents with no posted warning signs, so steer clients elsewhere then. Stairs make it unsuitable for anyone with mobility limits.
Kaʻaʻawa
A 2-hour guided horseback ride along the northern ranch and into Ka'a'awa 'Jurassic' Valley, the filming location for Jurassic Park, Godzilla, Lost and 50 First Dates; screen out clients who don't meet the height/weight/age limits before booking.
Kaʻaʻawa
The ranch's signature sightseeing tour: an open-air vehicle ride to film sites for the original Jurassic Park plus Jurassic World and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (Indominus Rex paddock, gallimimus field), Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla and more, with a guide narrating the filming history. Easiest of the three Kualoa options for clients who don't want to bike or ride a horse; wheelchair-accessible vehicles may be limited — check with the ranch for mobility needs.

Mākena
End of the road: Haleakalā's last lava flow meets the sea. Wild goats on the black rock, a coral-white cove a two-hour walk along the King's Trail. No shade, no water, no services.
Keʻanae
Lava-rock peninsula with taro fields and the surf crashing on the rocks, halfway down the Road to Hāna. Aunty Sandy's banana bread stand is the reason to stop.
North Shore
The surf capital of the world — waves reach 15–30 feet at Pipeline and Sunset Beach November through February. April through September the swell drops and beginners can take lessons at Waimea Bay or in Haleiwa town. Best day structure: start in Haleiwa for breakfast (Waialua Bakery or Sunrise Shack), drive east along Kamehameha Hwy stopping at Laniakea turtles, Waimea Bay and Valley, Ehukai Pillbox if the group wants a hike, then Pipeline and Sunset Beach. Finish with Giovanni's shrimp truck (garlic butter; cash only). Go on a weekday — Saturday traffic through Haleiwa creates genuine 2-hour gridlock.
Kaʻaʻawa
The most cinematic ranch in Hawaii — Jurassic Park, Lost, and 50 First Dates all filmed here. Book the 2.5-hour Jurassic Adventure specifically, not the shorter Hollywood Movie Sites tour — you cover far more of the valley and the pacing is better. Morning slots are less crowded and cooler. Combine with the zip-line for older kids or teenagers and it fills a full, genuinely spectacular day.
North Shore
Easy 4km round trip to two WWII military bunkers perched above the North Shore. The payoff is a front-row seat looking straight down on Pipeline and Sunset Beach — best place on the island to watch big-wave surfing in winter without being in danger. Allow 30 min to the first bunker, 10 more to the second.
North Shore
Botanical garden covering a sacred Hawaiian valley floor with 5,000+ plant species, historical sites, and a 15m swimming waterfall at the end. Unlike Manoa Falls, you can actually swim here — life jackets are mandatory and provided free. The garden walk is 1.6km each way through incredibly lush vegetation. One of the most complete nature experiences on the North Shore.
North Shore
Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu) regularly haul out on this beach to bask — the most reliable turtle-spotting beach on Oahu and often the only place visitors see turtles on land. Stay behind the rope barrier; federal law requires 10 feet minimum from a resting sea turtle. Best viewing late morning when turtles come ashore to warm up. A 30-minute stop that consistently ranks as a trip highlight for families.
Kaʻaʻawa
Not to be confused with Kualoa Ranch next door — this is a free public beach park with one of the most striking settings on Oahu: a long white sand beach facing the small island of Mokoliʻi ("Chinaman's Hat") against a backdrop of fluted Ko'olau ridges. Walk right along the beach; the further you go, the fewer the people. Kayak out to Mokoliʻi at low tide. Almost Polynesian in feel — a world away from Waikiki.
Kaʻaʻawa
A casual roadside farm store specializing in Oahu-grown macadamia nuts — a worthwhile stop rather than buying airport mac nuts. Taste a dozen flavors (chocolate, coconut, wasabi, plain roasted), plus locally grown coffee prepared several ways. Not a formal tour — just wandering the farm and sampling. Good opportunity to buy quality local gifts without the Waikiki markup.
North Shore
Oahu's best North Shore snorkeling — a natural lava-rock cove teeming with tropical fish, moray eels, and sea turtles, with dramatic underwater arches and swim-throughs formed by ancient lava flows. Free and uncrowded year-round in summer; a genuine alternative when Hanauma Bay reservations are sold out. The underwater topography is more dramatic than Hanauma Bay's sandy reef. Absolutely critical caveat: this spot is safe only May through September when the North Shore is flat. In winter, the same cove becomes a surge trap — the big swells that make Pipeline spectacular make Shark's Cove lethal.
North Shore
Boat trip 3 miles offshore into open Pacific water to free-swim — no cage — with Galapagos and sandbar sharks guided by marine biologists. The science briefing before entry is substantive; these are conservation researchers using eco-tourism to fund shark behavior studies. Average encounter is 15–25 sharks. Deeply respectful of the animals — no feeding, no touching. The experience converts most first-timers into shark advocates.
North Shore
Tandem jumps from 14,000 feet above Oahu's North Shore — freefall for 60 seconds before canopy opens over a panorama of the entire island. On a clear day you can see all the way to Diamond Head and Waikiki from the chute. Pacific Skydiving has a stronger safety record; Skydive Hawaii has a slightly more scenic jump zone. Both are well-regarded operators.
Mākena
3,000 feet of golden sand with no hotels and crystalline water — the longest undeveloped beach on Maui. Shore break is powerful; broken necks have occurred (never dive headfirst). Little Beach (clothing optional) is a 5-min walk over the lava point.
Kapalua
3.5-mile public coastal trail connecting three distinct beaches. Passes ancient Hawaiian ruins and coastal lava formations. Whale watching from the trail December–April. Best swimming at Kapalua Bay itself.
Central Maui
The best mountain hike on Maui that is not Haleakala — 6.4km round trip through the lush West Maui Mountains with 500m elevation gain. The upper ridge delivers sweeping views of the north coast on one side and Ma'alaea Bay on the other, with deep green valley walls on either flank. After rain, waterfalls appear on the ridges and the vegetation turns impossibly vivid. Far less crowded than Iao Valley 15 minutes away. Pairs naturally with Iao Valley for a full West Maui day: do Waihe'e Ridge in the early morning while it's clear, then Iao Valley after.
Kapalua
The best bay snorkeling on Maui — an almost-enclosed bay with no beach runoff, exceptional water clarity, dense coral, and extraordinary fish diversity. The forest trail through the old plantation gives the feeling of discovering somewhere secret. Go as early as possible: morning glassy conditions give 15–20m visibility; afternoon trade wind chop degrades it significantly. Note that the entire character of this place changes in winter: November through March Honolua becomes one of Maui's premier big-wave surf breaks — snorkeling is impossible and the surfing from the cliff above is spectacular to watch. Check conditions before driving up.
Mākena
"Turtle Town" is the colloquial name for the reef offshore of Maluaka Beach — the most reliable spot on Maui for in-water turtle encounters. Hawaiian green sea turtles congregate here to feed on reef algae; they are so accustomed to snorkelers that they often cruise within arm's reach (maintain 10 feet by law). Enter the water from the beach and swim southwest toward the rocky point where the reef begins. The coral itself is beautiful independent of the turtles. Significantly quieter than the Wailea resort beaches to the north.
Princeville
A series of natural pools carved into the volcanic rock at the base of north shore sea cliffs — on a calm summer day, swimming in the ocean-fed pools above the crashing surf is extraordinary. The access trail is about 10 minutes, sometimes muddy, passing a small waterfall. The main pool is a further short walk left along the coast. The setting is genuinely spectacular: crystal water, lava shelves, ocean beyond.
Port Allen
Watching the sun set over the Na Pali horizon from a catamaran, with dinner and open bar, is the definitive Kauai luxury evening. Captain Andy's has the best reputation for service and food. Humpback whales in season December–April.
Līhuʻe
Float through five 19th-century sugarcane plantation irrigation tunnels — pitch-black passages illuminated by your headlamp. Originally built in 1870. Ends at a natural swimming hole. The only activity like it in Hawaii. A perfect counterpoint to beach days.
Kalāheo
The largest coffee estate in the United States — 3,100 acres producing 50% of all coffee grown in Hawaii. The free self-guided walk winds through coffee trees at various stages with excellent interpretive signs, plus a small museum and multi-variety tasting bar. The Kauai coffee character (smooth, low-acid, tropical fruit notes) is quite different from Kona coffee; try both side-by-side at the tasting counter. A pleasant 45-minute stop that pairs naturally with a Poipu or Waimea Canyon day.
Ka Lae
One of only four green sand beaches in the world — color from olivine crystals eroding from a cinder cone. The dramatic crescent bowl is hidden behind a cliff, making arrival genuinely surprising. Strong waves crash directly onto the sand — swimming is dangerous here.
North Kohala
The most dramatic valley viewpoint on the Big Island — a sweeping panorama over Pololū Bay and the green-walled valley, with the north Kohala sea cliffs stretching beyond in both directions. The 10-minute descent to the black sand beach is steep but manageable and completely worth it (swimming is prohibited due to powerful shore break and currents). The black sand, wild vegetation, and total isolation create a landscape that feels genuinely primordial. An ideal drive-and-stop on the way back from a North Kohala day.
Māʻalaea
Molokini is a partially submerged volcanic crater 2.5 miles offshore — one of the top snorkeling spots in the Pacific. Visibility often 100–150 feet. Over 250 fish species in the protected marine sanctuary. Book morning departures only — afternoon wind chop degrades visibility significantly and makes the crossing rough. For the best small-group experience, book with Redline Rafting: rigid inflatable boats with 8–12 passengers versus the 150-person catamaran crowd. If budget is not the constraint, the difference in experience is not subtle.
Hilo
This is most likely the place she means: a lagoon walled off by lava rock and reef, fed by cold freshwater springs that float over warmer seawater, so swimmers feel both temperatures at once — 'mélange d'eau douce et d'eau salée' at '10 minutes d'Hilo'. Richardson Ocean Park further along the same road also has brackish water but is better known as a black-sand snorkel beach. Green sea turtles feed along the reef; keep at least 10 ft away. Lifeguard coverage is reported differently by sources (daily vs weekends, holidays and summer, 9:30 a.m.–4:45 p.m.), so do not promise a lifeguard; ask about conditions and stay out when surf is high.
Upcountry
Daytime is the calm alternative to the sunrise crowds: the crater colours are best in mid-morning light, before clouds often fill it in the afternoon. The first mile of Sliding Sands down and back takes about an hour; the climb back up at altitude is the hard part, so go slowly, drink water and bring warm layers — it is far colder than the coast. Do not move or take rocks; it is illegal and culturally disrespectful. The park closes both districts in severe weather, so check nps.gov/hale the day before.
Māʻalaea
The early-1800s footpath over the south slopes of the West Maui Mountains: 5.5 miles end to end, up to about 1,600 ft, with views of Kahoʻolawe, Lānaʻi and humpbacks from October to May. Most people climb to the ridge top and come back. Start at first light — it is hot, dry, rocky and exposed, and the wind at the top is strong.
Upcountry
Keoneheʻeheʻe drops nearly 2,500 ft in 3.9 miles to the crater floor over soft cinder, past the red-and-black cones of the summit valley. Most day hikers turn around well before the floor; allow twice as long to climb back out as it took to go down, at 10,000 ft with thin air. Bring layers, rain gear and sun protection: it swings between 30 and 65 °F.
Kīlauea
The north shore's reef-protected lagoon — the calmest swimming on the island, shallow for a long way out. The afternoon stop after the Kīlauea lighthouse and Hanalei.
Hilo
Downtown Hilo's market: lychee, rambutan, apple bananas, papaya, leis and lunch plates. On the way from the airport to the waterfalls on a Wednesday or Saturday.
Māʻalaea
Two consecutive boat dives, one on the outside wall of Molokini crater with 100-foot visibility and pelagics. She sells it as a pair with the manta night dive on the Big Island.
Lāʻie
Six authentic Polynesian village re-creations (Hawaii, Samoa, Fiji, Tahiti, Tonga, Aotearoa) operated by BYU Hawaii students. The evening show is genuinely spectacular, not formulaic. Plan a full afternoon and evening.
Mānoa Valley
1.6-mile round trip through lush rainforest to a 150-foot waterfall. The valley receives 150+ inches of rain annually — truly primordial. Do NOT swim in the pool (bacterial contamination).
Māʻalaea
Hawaii's largest aquarium, built around Hawaiian ocean ecology. The 750,000-gallon open-ocean tank is experienced through a 54-foot acrylic tunnel. The humpback whale exhibit (January–April) is outstanding.
Kīlauea
The northernmost point of the main Hawaiian islands — lighthouse promontory above sea cliffs. Red-footed boobies, Laysan albatross, great frigatebirds, and spinner dolphins regularly visible. One of the best wildlife viewing spots in Hawaii, largely undiscovered by mass tourism.
Kōkeʻe
At 4,345 feet elevation, Koke'e is where the Na Pali cliffs begin to rise. The Alakai Swamp is the world's highest swamp and habitat for some of Hawaii's most endangered native birds. Often misty and cool — remarkable contrast to the beach below.
Hilo
A 0.4-mile loop trail through tropical rainforest to the 442-foot Akaka Falls. The density of tropical flora — heliconias, ginger, orchids, tree ferns — is staggering. One of Hawaii's tallest waterfalls. Pair with Hilo Farmers Market (Tuesday and Saturday mornings).
South Kona
The most significant cultural site on the Big Island — a Hawaiian Place of Refuge where kapu (law) breakers, defeated warriors, and civilians could reach safety and receive absolution from priests. The reconstructed royal grounds, carved ki'i akua (deity figures), royal fishponds, and enormous mortarless stone wall (built without metal tools around 1550) are extraordinarily well-preserved. A self-guided audio tour walks you through the site's role in Hawaiian society. The ocean setting — palm trees, ancient lava coast, crystal water — is as beautiful as any resort. Do this before or after Two Step snorkeling directly next door.
South Kona
The best shore snorkeling on the Big Island and one of the finest in Hawaii — a natural two-step lava entry drops directly into 30–50 foot visibility water with exceptional coral coverage and fish density. Spinner dolphins rest in the bay in the mornings; manta rays pass through occasionally. The lack of a sandy beach means the water is completely clear of sediment. Combine with Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau next door: visit the cultural site, then cool off in the bay. Look underwater near the boat mooring area for the word "ALOHA" spelled out in coral and stones.
Hilo
An 24m waterfall on the Wailuku River, free and 5 minutes from Hilo — one of the easiest payoffs in Hawaii. Named for the rainbow that appears in the mist on sunny mornings. A second viewpoint through the forest above the falls reveals the lava tube the river flows through. Pair with Akaka Falls (30 min north) for a complete Hilo waterfall morning. Also pairs naturally with the Hilo Farmers Market on Tuesday or Saturday mornings.
Hilo
When Kilauea is actively erupting, the only way to see rivers of lava and a lava lake from above is by helicopter — the experience of watching fluid earth from 500 feet defies language. But Kilauea's eruptions are episodic and can cease overnight with no warning; check nps.gov/havo eruption status the morning you intend to book. If the summit caldera is active, book immediately for early in your stay rather than saving it for the last day. Blue Hawaiian has the best narration and safety record on the island; Safari Helicopters is a solid budget option.
Kealakekua Bay
Double kayaks across the bay to the Captain Cook monument, spinner dolphins on the way, snorkelling at the monument. She includes two double kayaks in most four-island trips.
Nuʻuanu
The most dramatic viewpoint on Oahu — a notch in the Ko'olau pali at 1,200 feet, looking straight down a sheer cliff face onto the windward coast. Site of the 1795 Battle of Nu'uanu where King Kamehameha I unified Oahu. The trade winds through the notch are extraordinary — strong enough to lean into. A 30-minute stop that leaves a lasting impression. Easy to combine with a Kailua day on the windward side.
Kealakekua Bay
The premier snorkeling spot on the Big Island — an underwater state monument with 100+ foot visibility, coral formations, and tropical fish density rivaling the Red Sea. The Captain Cook Monument marks where Cook was killed in 1779. Spinner dolphins habitually rest in the bay mornings. Boat-only access keeps it pristine.
Puna
The 2018 Kilauea eruption buried 35 square kilometers of the Puna District under 20–30 meters of lava — entire neighborhoods, the former Kaimū Black Sand Beach, and the historic Royal Gardens subdivision. Walking through Kalapana's lava fields today is like walking on the surface of a different planet: standing dead palm trees emerging from black lava, the outline of buried roads and mailboxes still visible, new black sand beach forming where the 2018 lava met the ocean. Kehena Black Sand Beach, 10 minutes along the coastal road, is an exhilarating and raw destination: clothing-optional by local custom, accessed by a steep cliff trail, with spinner dolphins frequently in the bay and strong body-surfing waves. Go for the Puna coastal road (Hwy 137) even if you skip the specific stops — the jungle-lava-sea combination is unlike anywhere else.
East Honolulu
Hawaii's top snorkeling spot — crystal-clear bay sheltered from open-ocean swells. Reef fish density is extraordinary. Bring your own gear (rentals available but overpriced). Shallow inner bay ideal for beginners; stronger swimmers venture to the slot channels.
East Honolulu
A short, easy drive that pairs well with Diamond Head or Hanauma Bay; the blowhole spouts highest when the swell is up. Sandy Beach is for watching, not swimming — its shorebreak causes more spinal injuries than any other beach on Oʻahu. The lighthouse trail is hot, dry and windy with no shade, so go early or late; November–May it is a good whale-watching spot. The Makapuʻu tide pools below are a closed, dangerous area.
East Honolulu
Climb 1,048 railway-tie steps straight up the spine of an extinct volcanic crater — the most demanding short hike on Oahu. 360° views at the top take in Diamond Head, Kailua, and the open Pacific. Not for the faint of heart or knees. Vastly underrated compared to Diamond Head and far less crowded.
East Honolulu
A paved 2.4-mile round-trip trail to a lighthouse perch at 647 feet — the most accessible elevated viewpoint on Oahu, open to all fitness levels. Views sweep across the Windward Coast, Rabbit Island, and the offshore wildlife sanctuary. December through April it becomes the best whale-watching vantage point on the island: humpbacks are frequently visible breaching from the trail without binoculars, no boat required. The cliffs drop directly to tidepools below, and there's almost always something moving in the water. Natural pairing with a Kailua or Hanauma Bay day.
Kaʻū
Jet-black volcanic sand from lava meeting the ocean. Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu) regularly bask on the beach — federal law requires a 10ft distance. The black-sand, green-palm, blue-water contrast makes for extraordinary photography. Ocean swimming is extremely dangerous here.
Kona Coffee Belt
Kona coffee (grown in the volcanic soil of the Kona Coffee Belt between 800–2,000ft on Mauna Loa's slopes) is among the rarest and most prized coffee in the world — the only commercial coffee grown in the US. Greenwell Farms is the best free farm tour on the island: 45–60 minutes with a knowledgeable guide covering the full process from cherry to cup, including a cupping at the end. Bay View Farm is shorter but convenient if combining with Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau nearby. Critical reminder for buying: Hawaii law allows "Kona blend" coffee to contain as little as 10% actual Kona beans. Buy only 100% Kona from the farm directly — never from airport shops.
