Māʻalaea
The early-1800s footpath over the south slopes of the West Maui Mountains: 5.5 miles end to end, up to about 1,600 ft, with views of Kahoʻolawe, Lānaʻi and humpbacks from October to May. Most people climb to the ridge top and come back. Start at first light — it is hot, dry, rocky and exposed, and the wind at the top is strong.
No reservation or fee. Two trailheads off Honoapiʻilani Highway (30): the Ukumehame lot at Manawaipueo Gulch, about 0.25 mile north of the Pali tunnel, or the east gate 0.2 mile south of the Hwy 30/31 junction (close the gate behind you). No water, toilets or shade.
