North Shore
Oahu's best North Shore snorkeling — a natural lava-rock cove teeming with tropical fish, moray eels, and sea turtles, with dramatic underwater arches and swim-throughs formed by ancient lava flows. Free and uncrowded year-round in summer; a genuine alternative when Hanauma Bay reservations are sold out. The underwater topography is more dramatic than Hanauma Bay's sandy reef. Absolutely critical caveat: this spot is safe only May through September when the North Shore is flat. In winter, the same cove becomes a surge trap — the big swells that make Pipeline spectacular make Shark's Cove lethal.
Free, no reservation. Located at Pupukea Beach Park on Kamehameha Hwy, 5 min east of Haleiwa. Street parking along the highway. Gear rental from Surf-N-Sea in Haleiwa (10 min) or seasonally from vendors near the cove.
