Ka Lae
One of only four green sand beaches in the world — color from olivine crystals eroding from a cinder cone. The dramatic crescent bowl is hidden behind a cliff, making arrival genuinely surprising. Strong waves crash directly onto the sand — swimming is dangerous here.
No permit required. Drive to Ka Lae parking area, then 2.5-mile hike each way (no fee). Or pay local vendors $15–20/person for a truck ride over the rough 4WD road. Do not leave valuables in car.
Completely exposed to sun and wind. UV is extreme at this latitude. Ocean swimming dangerous due to shore pound and currents.
