Princeville
A series of natural pools carved into the volcanic rock at the base of north shore sea cliffs — on a calm summer day, swimming in the ocean-fed pools above the crashing surf is extraordinary. The access trail is about 10 minutes, sometimes muddy, passing a small waterfall. The main pool is a further short walk left along the coast. The setting is genuinely spectacular: crystal water, lava shelves, ocean beyond.
No reservation or fee. Trailhead at the end of Punahele Rd in Princeville. Limited main parking — park at the Princeville Makai Golf Club (~14 min walk to trailhead). Wear closed-toe shoes; the trail descends through mud and the lava approach is slippery. Check surf forecast the morning of your visit.
SUMMER ONLY (approximately June–September when north swells are minimal). October through May: wave surge at this site is lethal — people die here every winter, including strong swimmers. Even in summer, check surf forecast the morning of: any swell above 2 feet makes entry dangerous. If there are any waves washing over the lava shelf, do not enter. Rangers do not patrol this site.
