Kula
Watching the sun rise above the clouds at 10,023 feet is transcendent — you are literally above most of Maui's clouds. Temperature is 30–40°F at summit; bring layers, gloves, and blankets. Allow 1.5 hours driving from Kihei at 3am. Schedule this early in the trip while the group is still on mainland time and naturally waking at 4–5am — it is far easier than on day 8. If sunrise permits are unavailable, the sunset visit (no reservation required) delivers nearly the same experience with none of the hardship; many visitors actually prefer it.
Hāna
You cannot do everything in one day — you will need to choose. Non-negotiable stops: Ke'anae Peninsula (about halfway, lava church + taro fields + Aunty Sandy's banana bread — order extra, it sells out), Waianapanapa Black Sand Beach (reserve separately $25/person), Hamoa Beach after Hana village, and Pipiwai Trail at Kipahulu for the bamboo forest and Waimoku Falls. Skip the Hana Lava Tube if time is short. Fill gas in Paia before departure — the only station in Hana can be closed. The back road from Kipahulu back to Kihei (~30 min of unpaved road past the Pools of 'Ohe'o) is prohibited under most rental car contracts and not insured; double back the same way.

A shallow, reef-protected lagoon on Maui's north shore next to Baldwin Beach, the calmest swimming spot in the Paia area and a good pick for families with small children; there is no shade, so bring an umbrella or tent.

A 17-acre county beach park named for the Baldwin family, whose sugar business built Pāʻia. Calm "Baby Beach" at the west end; heavy shorebreak mid-beach. Lifeguard, restrooms, showers, free parking.

Not a headline attraction, more a pleasant half-hour to hour detour.

A 27 ft stupa and prayer wheel at 81 Baldwin Ave, consecrated by the 14th Dalai Lama on 24 April 2007. Grounds open daily 8 AM to sunset.

West Maui
Drive it clockwise, Kapalua towards Wailuku, so you stay on the mountain side rather than the cliff edge. Past Nakalele the road narrows to one lane with blind bends, no guardrails and steep drops: give way to local drivers, be ready to reverse to a pull-out, and skip it if the traveller is a nervous driver, in heavy rain or in a large vehicle. At Nakalele stay well back — rogue waves over the lava shelf have swept people in and killed several. Kahakuloa is a residential village; stop at the roadside banana-bread stands (cash only) but drive slowly.
Kula
80-acre organic sugarcane farm and distillery on the slopes of Haleakalā making vodka (and a limited-release rum, Brum) from deep ocean mineral water; a relaxed tasting-room stop with a cocktail café, easy to combine with Kula Botanical Garden or 'Ulupalakua. Price is not firmly confirmed — verify before quoting a client.
Kīhei
Kihei's town park on the water: the whale statue, a skate park, ball fields and the first clear look at the coast heading south. A stop, not a destination.
West Maui
Blowhole on the wild north-west tip of Maui, a short steep walk down from the roadside lot at mile 38.5. Stay well back from the hole — it has taken lives. Part of her west-coast day with the Olivine Pools and Nāpili.
West Maui
The gentle crescent bay north of Kāʻanapali, with lunch at the Sea House on the sand, and Slaughterhouse (Mokulēʻia) Beach next door for an afternoon of white sand. Snorkel Honolua Bay in the morning first.
West Maui
Natural tide pools on the lava shelf near Kahakuloa. Swim only in summer calm; in winter the waves wash over the pools and people have been swept off. Twenty minutes of scrambling down from the lot.

Surf town at the start of the Hāna road: Mana Foods for picnic supplies, Paia Fish Market for lunch, Hoʻokipa's windsurfers five minutes on. The stop before the Twin Falls.
Hāna
The black-sand beach, sea caves and lava arches at the end of the Road to Hāna. The reservation is the trap: it releases exactly 30 days ahead and sells out.
West Maui
The Polynesian dinner show she sells on Maui — oceanfront, seated on mats or at tables, the show done properly. Her quote lists it at $265 per person when it is not in the price.
West Maui
Humpback season is December through April; a rigid-hull zodiac out of Lāhainā or Māʻalaea gets close and fast. Not for the seasick — the catamaran is the gentle version.

Roadside market on North Kihei Road for tropical fruit, local snacks and juice — the right stop on the way north.

The longest beach on Maui and close to empty: walk north from Kenolio toward Maʻalaea with nobody in sight. Swimming is fine on calm days; the wind picks up after noon.

Lāhainā
The historic whaling capital of the Pacific and the largest banyan tree in the USA (planted 1873, covers 1.94 acres). The 2023 fire killed 102 residents and permanently changed this town. Visit respectfully and spend money at surviving local businesses.
Kula
The underrated alternative to sunrise — warmer temperatures, the drive up in daylight, and the same extraordinary sky show above the clouds, without the 3am alarm. Do a 20–30 minute walk down the Sliding Sands Trail into the crater before sunset to experience the scale of the caldera from inside. After the sun sets, stay 20 more minutes for the cloud color show below the rim. If sunrise permits are sold out (which happens constantly), recommend sunset without hesitation — many visitors actually prefer it for comfort and for having energy to appreciate what they are seeing.
Kula
The most beautiful farm on Maui — 55+ varieties of lavender on the slopes of Haleakala with sweeping ocean views. The terrace tea service is a lovely slow morning. Combine with an Upcountry Maui drive.
Pāʻia
The world capital of windsurfing and kitesurfing — on a strong trade wind afternoon, 30–50 world-class riders transform the bay into an open-air performance that no arena seat can replicate. Watch from the upper lookout before descending. The beach itself is not for swimming (powerful shore break and rip current), but May through September the right side of the bay calms enough for snorkeling, and Hawaiian green sea turtles regularly haul out on the sand to bask. A 45-minute stop with a very high payoff-to-effort ratio.
Lāhainā
Maui waters are legendary for blue marlin, mahi-mahi, yellowfin tuna, and wahoo. The 100-fathom drop-off is 1.5 miles offshore. Most restaurants offer "catch and cook" service to prepare your catch that evening.
Kahului
The only way to truly see Haleakala's massive crater from above, fly the Road to Hana without driving it, and see the interior waterfalls that have no land access. The West Maui Mountains — also only accessible by air — are as dramatic as Kauai's Na Pali Coast and almost no one has seen them. Blue Hawaiian has the best safety record and narration; Air Maui offers doors-off tours for photographers. The Na Moku 45-minute route covers the most essential sights; the Circle Island route adds the Kaupo Gap and Hana coast and is worth the extra cost.
Wailea
The easiest snorkel on the south side: reef right off the sand at the north end, calm most mornings, lifeguard-free but sheltered. Starting point of the Wailea Beach Path.
Wailuku
A stone house built in 1833 at the mouth of ʻĪao Valley, later the Wailuku Female Seminary run by Caroline and Edward Bailey. A museum since 1957: pre-contact Hawaiian artifacts and Edward Bailey's paintings of ʻĪao. Open Tuesday to Friday, 10 AM–2 PM.

Queen Kaʻahumanu visited in 1832 and asked that the permanent church bear her name. The present building, the fourth on the site, dates from the 1870s; services and hymns are still in Hawaiian.

The name means "damming of the waters", for the 1790 Battle of Kepaniwai, when Kamehameha I's forces defeated Maui's army here. The county park honors Maui's peoples with Hawaiian, Chinese, Japanese, Filipino, Portuguese, Korean and New England pavilions. Open 7 AM–7 PM, free.
Wailuku
Kūkaʻemoku, the ʻĪao Needle, is an erosional ridge rising 1,200 ft from the valley floor that looks like a spire seen end-on; it is sacred in Hawaiian tradition.
Makawao
The old paniolo (cowboy) town where Baldwin Ave, Makawao Ave and Olinda Rd meet. The forest reserve above it was proclaimed on 21 April 1908 to protect East Maui's watershed.
Wailuku
The heart of historic Wailuku, Maui's county seat since 1905. The Spanish Mission-style ʻĪao Theater opened on 22 August 1928 as a movie and vaudeville house; it is on the National Register and home to Maui OnStage.
Wailea
A paved mile of oceanfront past the resorts between Ulua and Polo Beach — the South Maui postcard. Pedestrian only: park and walk. Humpbacks from the path in winter.
Wailuku
Sacred valley with a striking 1,200-foot green needle (Iao Needle) rising from the valley floor. Site of the 1790 Battle of Kepaniwai. The valley receives 400 inches of rain annually — impossibly lush.
Kīpahulu
The Kipahulu section of Haleakala National Park is completely different from the summit — lush, coastal, and jungle-green. The Pools of 'Ohe'o (Seven Sacred Pools) cascade in tiers to the ocean and are beautiful to photograph; swimming is now prohibited due to bacterial risk. The real experience is the Pipiwai Trail (4km round trip): after 20 minutes through dense rainforest, a section of giant bamboo appears — a cathedral that blocks the sky, with the stalks creaking and resonating in the wind. It is genuinely unlike anything else in Hawaii. The trail ends at 61m Waimoku Falls. This is the best 2 hours at the end of a Road to Hana day and the reason to not turn around at Hana village.
Haʻikū
The traditional first stop on the Road to Hana — a short, easy walk through fruit trees and bamboo to multiple tiered waterfalls with actual swimmable pools (unlike most waterfalls on the Hana route, which prohibit swimming). It is somewhat commercialized — there are smoothie stands — but the falls and pools are genuinely beautiful and refreshing. Keep it to 60–90 minutes or it derails the timing for the rest of the day. Also works as a standalone hike from Paia for anyone who wants a quick nature experience without doing the full Road to Hana.
Makawao
Ride through 700-year-old eucalyptus forests and open paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) pasturelands at 3,500ft elevation. The landscape — cooler, green, and cinematic — is completely different from the coast.
Mākena
Snorkelling over lava in a protected reserve at Āhihi Bay — the best fish count on the coast when the sea is calm. Rocky entry: reef shoes, no fins on the rocks. No facilities.
Kapalua
Clear-water snorkel beach inside the Honolua-Mokulē'ia Bay Marine Life Conservation District, turtles are common; calm and good for snorkeling in summer, but winter (roughly Nov-Mar) brings dangerous surf and rip currents with no posted warning signs, so steer clients elsewhere then. Stairs make it unsuitable for anyone with mobility limits.
Mākena
End of the road: Haleakalā's last lava flow meets the sea. Wild goats on the black rock, a coral-white cove a two-hour walk along the King's Trail. No shade, no water, no services.
Keʻanae
Lava-rock peninsula with taro fields and the surf crashing on the rocks, halfway down the Road to Hāna. Aunty Sandy's banana bread stand is the reason to stop.
Mākena
3,000 feet of golden sand with no hotels and crystalline water — the longest undeveloped beach on Maui. Shore break is powerful; broken necks have occurred (never dive headfirst). Little Beach (clothing optional) is a 5-min walk over the lava point.
Kapalua
3.5-mile public coastal trail connecting three distinct beaches. Passes ancient Hawaiian ruins and coastal lava formations. Whale watching from the trail December–April. Best swimming at Kapalua Bay itself.
Central Maui
The best mountain hike on Maui that is not Haleakala — 6.4km round trip through the lush West Maui Mountains with 500m elevation gain. The upper ridge delivers sweeping views of the north coast on one side and Ma'alaea Bay on the other, with deep green valley walls on either flank. After rain, waterfalls appear on the ridges and the vegetation turns impossibly vivid. Far less crowded than Iao Valley 15 minutes away. Pairs naturally with Iao Valley for a full West Maui day: do Waihe'e Ridge in the early morning while it's clear, then Iao Valley after.
Kapalua
The best bay snorkeling on Maui — an almost-enclosed bay with no beach runoff, exceptional water clarity, dense coral, and extraordinary fish diversity. The forest trail through the old plantation gives the feeling of discovering somewhere secret. Go as early as possible: morning glassy conditions give 15–20m visibility; afternoon trade wind chop degrades it significantly. Note that the entire character of this place changes in winter: November through March Honolua becomes one of Maui's premier big-wave surf breaks — snorkeling is impossible and the surfing from the cliff above is spectacular to watch. Check conditions before driving up.
Mākena
"Turtle Town" is the colloquial name for the reef offshore of Maluaka Beach — the most reliable spot on Maui for in-water turtle encounters. Hawaiian green sea turtles congregate here to feed on reef algae; they are so accustomed to snorkelers that they often cruise within arm's reach (maintain 10 feet by law). Enter the water from the beach and swim southwest toward the rocky point where the reef begins. The coral itself is beautiful independent of the turtles. Significantly quieter than the Wailea resort beaches to the north.
Māʻalaea
Molokini is a partially submerged volcanic crater 2.5 miles offshore — one of the top snorkeling spots in the Pacific. Visibility often 100–150 feet. Over 250 fish species in the protected marine sanctuary. Book morning departures only — afternoon wind chop degrades visibility significantly and makes the crossing rough. For the best small-group experience, book with Redline Rafting: rigid inflatable boats with 8–12 passengers versus the 150-person catamaran crowd. If budget is not the constraint, the difference in experience is not subtle.
Upcountry
Daytime is the calm alternative to the sunrise crowds: the crater colours are best in mid-morning light, before clouds often fill it in the afternoon. The first mile of Sliding Sands down and back takes about an hour; the climb back up at altitude is the hard part, so go slowly, drink water and bring warm layers — it is far colder than the coast. Do not move or take rocks; it is illegal and culturally disrespectful. The park closes both districts in severe weather, so check nps.gov/hale the day before.
Māʻalaea
The early-1800s footpath over the south slopes of the West Maui Mountains: 5.5 miles end to end, up to about 1,600 ft, with views of Kahoʻolawe, Lānaʻi and humpbacks from October to May. Most people climb to the ridge top and come back. Start at first light — it is hot, dry, rocky and exposed, and the wind at the top is strong.
Upcountry
Keoneheʻeheʻe drops nearly 2,500 ft in 3.9 miles to the crater floor over soft cinder, past the red-and-black cones of the summit valley. Most day hikers turn around well before the floor; allow twice as long to climb back out as it took to go down, at 10,000 ft with thin air. Bring layers, rain gear and sun protection: it swings between 30 and 65 °F.
Māʻalaea
Two consecutive boat dives, one on the outside wall of Molokini crater with 100-foot visibility and pelagics. She sells it as a pair with the manta night dive on the Big Island.
Māʻalaea
Hawaii's largest aquarium, built around Hawaiian ocean ecology. The 750,000-gallon open-ocean tank is experienced through a 54-foot acrylic tunnel. The humpback whale exhibit (January–April) is outstanding.
