Haʻikū
The traditional first stop on the Road to Hana — a short, easy walk through fruit trees and bamboo to multiple tiered waterfalls with actual swimmable pools (unlike most waterfalls on the Hana route, which prohibit swimming). It is somewhat commercialized — there are smoothie stands — but the falls and pools are genuinely beautiful and refreshing. Keep it to 60–90 minutes or it derails the timing for the rest of the day. Also works as a standalone hike from Paia for anyone who wants a quick nature experience without doing the full Road to Hana.
No reservation. Parking $10/car on-site. Open 8am–3:30pm. Located on Hwy 36 about 2 miles past Haiku — the first notable stop after leaving Paia on the Road to Hana. Wear closed-toe shoes; bring bug spray.
More impressive after rain when the falls run fuller. Trail is slippery — closed-toe shoes essential. Open year-round.
