End of the road: Haleakalā's last lava flow meets the sea. Wild goats on the black rock, a coral-white cove a two-hour walk along the King's Trail. No shade, no water, no services.
No reservation. Drive to the end of Mākena Road past ʻĀhihi-Kīnaʻu and park at the La Pérouse lot; the Hoapili Trail starts there. Carry all your water — there is none, and no shade.
Morning before the wind; the road narrows over the lava — drive or ride slowly and turn around at the lot.
