Upcountry
A guided descent on the paved roads of Haleakalā's western slope, coasting through ranch land and Upcountry towns. Commercial rides start below the national park boundary rather than at the summit. It suits confident riders who are comfortable in traffic on long descents; age and height limits are set by each operator. Keep it to a morning without the sunrise, or book the sunrise on another day: combining the two makes a very long, very early day.
Book with the agency's chosen operator and ask for its minimum age and height and whether a summit visit is included. A summit sunrise is not part of the ride by default: private cars need a $1 per-vehicle reservation on recreation.gov for 3–7 a.m. entry (bookable up to 60 days ahead, one per three days), plus the $30 vehicle entry fee.
The upper slopes are cold, wet and often in cloud; the summit is at least 20°F colder than sea level. Dress in layers even when the coast is hot.
