Kula
A small family café in Keokea, past Kula, roasting coffee grown on the slopes; the porch is the reward on the road to ʻUlupalakua.
Kula
A family bistro on Lower Kula Road and the main sit-down meal in Kula, cooking generous American plates with island fish and produce. Dinner mains run from the low $30s to the $60s; breakfast is lighter on the wallet. Vegetarian choices include a vegetable frittata, a grilled-vegetable panini and pesto pasta. No reservations, so arrive early for dinner or make it the lunch stop of an Upcountry day.
Kula
Breakfast on the slope of Haleakalā with the whole central valley and the West Maui Mountains below — the natural stop on the way down from sunrise.
Makawao
Chef Bev Gannon's Upcountry classic, in a 1920s plantation store among the old pineapple fields — one of the restaurants that started Hawaiʻi regional cuisine.
Makawao
A family bakery in Makawao for more than a century: cream puffs and the cinnamon-sugar donut on a stick. Go early, the favourites sell out by late morning; bring cash just in case.
