Wailea
A paved mile of oceanfront past the resorts between Ulua and Polo Beach — the South Maui postcard. Pedestrian only: park and walk. Humpbacks from the path in winter.
Mākena
End of the road: Haleakalā's last lava flow meets the sea. Wild goats on the black rock, a coral-white cove a two-hour walk along the King's Trail. No shade, no water, no services.
Māʻalaea
The early-1800s footpath over the south slopes of the West Maui Mountains: 5.5 miles end to end, up to about 1,600 ft, with views of Kahoʻolawe, Lānaʻi and humpbacks from October to May. Most people climb to the ridge top and come back. Start at first light — it is hot, dry, rocky and exposed, and the wind at the top is strong.
