Hilo
A 0.4-mile loop trail through tropical rainforest to the 442-foot Akaka Falls. The density of tropical flora — heliconias, ginger, orchids, tree ferns — is staggering. One of Hawaii's tallest waterfalls. Pair with Hilo Farmers Market (Tuesday and Saturday mornings).
Reserve at gostateparks.hawaii.gov; $5/person entry, $10 parking. Open daily 8am–5pm. Located 15 miles north of Hilo off Hwy 220.
More dramatic after rain (Hilo receives 140 inches/year). Slippery when wet — appropriate footwear required.
