Carlsmith Beach Park (Four Mile) — Hilo's Spring-Fed Lagoon

This is most likely the place she means: a lagoon walled off by lava rock and reef, fed by cold freshwater springs that float over warmer seawater, so swimmers feel both temperatures at once — 'mélange d'eau douce et d'eau salée' at '10 minutes d'Hilo'. Richardson Ocean Park further along the same road also has brackish water but is better known as a black-sand snorkel beach. Green sea turtles feed along the reef; keep at least 10 ft away. Lifeguard coverage is reported differently by sources (daily vs weekends, holidays and summer, 9:30 a.m.–4:45 p.m.), so do not promise a lifeguard; ask about conditions and stay out when surf is high.

Akaka Falls State Park

A 0.4-mile loop trail through tropical rainforest to the 442-foot Akaka Falls. The density of tropical flora — heliconias, ginger, orchids, tree ferns — is staggering. One of Hawaii's tallest waterfalls. Pair with Hilo Farmers Market (Tuesday and Saturday mornings).
Rainbow Falls — Waiānuenue

An 24m waterfall on the Wailuku River, free and 5 minutes from Hilo — one of the easiest payoffs in Hawaii. Named for the rainbow that appears in the mist on sunny mornings. A second viewpoint through the forest above the falls reveals the lava tube the river flows through. Pair with Akaka Falls (30 min north) for a complete Hilo waterfall morning. Also pairs naturally with the Hilo Farmers Market on Tuesday or Saturday mornings.
Lava Viewing Helicopter Tour

When Kilauea is actively erupting, the only way to see rivers of lava and a lava lake from above is by helicopter — the experience of watching fluid earth from 500 feet defies language. But Kilauea's eruptions are episodic and can cease overnight with no warning; check nps.gov/havo eruption status the morning you intend to book. If the summit caldera is active, book immediately for early in your stay rather than saving it for the last day. Blue Hawaiian has the best narration and safety record on the island; Safari Helicopters is a solid budget option.

Hilo Farmers Market (Wednesdays and Saturdays, corner of Mamo St and Kamehameha Ave) — the best farmers market in Hawaii for local atmosphere and product quality. Arrive by 8am for the best produce and the fewest people. Wednesday is larger than Saturday. Buy fresh coconuts, rambutan, lychee (in season), and watch the prices drop to half what they are in Kona.

Ken's House of Pancakes (Hilo) — the local institution; no longer 24 hours since 2020, now daily 6am–9pm. Order the Portuguese sausage omelette with rice. Enormous portions at astonishing prices. Cash preferred but cards accepted.

Sweet Cane Café (Hilo, near downtown) — the best healthy breakfast and lunch in Hilo. Smoothies, açaí bowls, fresh juices, and rice bowls using local ingredients. Low prices, welcoming atmosphere, popular with locals. Go before the Hilo Farmers Market on Tuesdays or Saturdays.

Quadrantid meteor shower (peak)
The Quadrantids are one of the year's strongest meteor showers, with a brief, sharp peak in early January that can produce 40 or more meteors per hour under dark skies. Because Hawaiʻi has some of the clearest, darkest skies in the U.S., the islands are a superb place to watch. Look in the hours before dawn, away from town lights — a high-elevation spot or a dark leeward beach is ideal. No telescope needed; just let your eyes adjust for 20 minutes.
