Wailua
A spectacular 27m double waterfall on the Wailua River — one of the most photographed waterfalls in Hawaii and famously used in the opening sequence of the old Fantasy Island TV series. The viewpoint parking area is right at the edge: no hike required, total time commitment 20 minutes. The cascade is at its most dramatic after rain when the Wailua River is running high. Combine with a Wailua River kayak day or as a quick stop on the way from Kapaa to the south shore.
Free, no reservation. Drive directly to the viewpoint parking area on Maalo Rd (Hwy 583), ~5 miles from Kuhio Hwy. Paved road. Note: access to the base of the falls is officially closed — viewpoint only.
Most dramatic after rain — the falls swell substantially. The road and viewpoint are accessible in any weather. Do not attempt to access the base of the falls; the trail is closed and the terrain is dangerous.
