Keoneheʻeheʻe drops nearly 2,500 ft in 3.9 miles to the crater floor over soft cinder, past the red-and-black cones of the summit valley. Most day hikers turn around well before the floor; allow twice as long to climb back out as it took to go down, at 10,000 ft with thin air. Bring layers, rain gear and sun protection: it swings between 30 and 65 °F.
