Kīpahulu
The Kipahulu section of Haleakala National Park is completely different from the summit — lush, coastal, and jungle-green. The Pools of 'Ohe'o (Seven Sacred Pools) cascade in tiers to the ocean and are beautiful to photograph; swimming is now prohibited due to bacterial risk. The real experience is the Pipiwai Trail (4km round trip): after 20 minutes through dense rainforest, a section of giant bamboo appears — a cathedral that blocks the sky, with the stalks creaking and resonating in the wind. It is genuinely unlike anything else in Hawaii. The trail ends at 61m Waimoku Falls. This is the best 2 hours at the end of a Road to Hana day and the reason to not turn around at Hana village.
No separate reservation required. Covered by the $30/vehicle Haleakala National Park pass (valid 3 days; same pass covers the summit). Located at the Kipahulu Visitor Center on Hwy 31, ~10 miles past Hana village — plan this as the final stop of a Road to Hana day and start the trail by 3pm to exit before dark. Bring bug spray and water; no food services at Kipahulu.
Beautiful in any weather — the bamboo forest needs no sunshine. Trail can be muddy; closed-toe shoes essential. Pools of 'Ohe'o viewing is year-round; check NPS status before visiting as flash flood closures occur.
