Free sunset viewing and naked-eye stargazing with staff-led sky talks at 9,200 ft; there have been no public telescopes since 2019 (safety/overcrowding), so this is not a telescope-viewing stop.
Free, no reservation for the nightly sunset and stargazing program; only the monthly limited-capacity telescope event needs booking. Open 9:00am–9:00pm daily with free parking; arrive 1.5–2 hours before sunset to acclimatise at 9,200 ft, and check hours on hilo.hawaii.edu/maunakea before sending clients.
