Kōkeʻe
At 4,345 feet elevation, Koke'e is where the Na Pali cliffs begin to rise. The Alakai Swamp is the world's highest swamp and habitat for some of Hawaii's most endangered native birds. Often misty and cool — remarkable contrast to the beach below.
No reservation required for day hikes. Free access. Bring water and lunch — no services available. Alakai Swamp Trail (3.5 miles roundtrip) is the most dramatic option.
Temperature is 50–70°F — much cooler than the coast. Bring rain gear and layers. Trail can be extremely muddy after rain.
